Kringe in 'n Bos

Kringe in 'n Bos (Circles in a Forest) is a beautiful circular route forest hike in Knysna in the Gold Field State Forest. The trail is named after the book: Kringe in 'n Bos by Dalene Matthee, which was set in the Knysna Forest. At the start of the hike there is a big tree which has been dedicated to the author and a memorial plaque placed in her honor.

“Our forests offer much more than just beautiful landscapes and wildlife. Each one has a different story to tell.” – Raveena Tandon

There are two routes for this hike, a 3km route (1.5hrs) and 9km route (3hrs). You will need a permit for this hike as is it part of the Garden Route National Park. Permits can be bought at the gate at Bibby's Hoek before the start of the hike. There is parking at the start of the trail and the path is well marked with distance markers every 500m. Both the 3km route and the 9km route start on the same path, after a while you there is a sign which indicates the path for the 3km route on the right take a right, if you wish to hike the 9km route instead, continue straight.

When I did his hike I did the 9km route. About 4.5km into the 9km route you will pass a small flowing body of water, this is where my hiking group decided to take a snack break and have a quick swim. During our rest by the stream, a few vervet monkeys decided to pay us a visit; they kept their distance and we kept ours but didn't want to tempt fate so we were shortly on our way.

This hike is absolutely beautiful, moderate trail in the heart of the Knysna forest home to many exquisite plants, animals and fungi.
